July Profile Features the Comparative Neuroanatomy Research of Dr. Kara Yopak
Dr. Kara Yopak’s research has focused on comparative neuroanatomy of cartilaginous fishes, and how the development of major brain areas vary between species in conjunction with the adaptive evolution of their sensory and motor systems. Her data suggest that brain organization and the relative development of major brain structures reflect an animal’s ecology, even in phylogenetically unrelated species that share certain lifestyle characteristics, a pattern similarly documented in other vertebrate groups. Read more about Kara’s work in this month’s Research Profile.

2010 ICES Conference Features Elasmobranch Fisheries Session
One of the theme sessions of the 2010 ICES Annual Science Conference is "Elasmobranch fisheries: developments in stock assessment, technical mitigation and management measures.” The Conference will be held in Nantes (France) from 20-24 September and the session conveners are Dominic Rihan (Irish Sea Fisheries Board), Jim Ellis (CEFAS, UK) and Henk Heessen (IMARES, Netherlands). Those interested in presenting their research are encouraged to submit an abstract by the April 15th deadline. More detailed information on the conference and elasmobranch session can be found on the ICES website (

Abstracts from Past AES Meetings Now Available
A complete inventory of all abstracts of oral and poster presentations from 1985–2005 AES meetings are now available and can be accessed from the “Meetings” menu on the AES homepage.
Abstracts from recent meetings will be added soon.
AES Facebook Site
We welcome active participation in the AES Facebook site and hope that it will provide an informal forum for the exchange of ideas, and the posting of interesting elasmobranch-themed current events, research findings, movie clips, and photos. Please note that the AES Facebook site is only available to current members.
AES Store Now Open!
The AES online store is open!

We offer a variety of elasmo-related goods, including pens, water bottles, and shirts. Proceeds go to support AES student funding.
The American Elasmobranch Society is a non-profit organization that seeks to advance the scientific study of living and fossil sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras, and the promotion of education, conservation, and wise utilization of natural resources. The Society holds annual meetings and presents research reports of interest to students of elasmobranch biology. Those meetings are held in conjunction with annual meetings of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists each year at rotating North American venues.
The membership of the society consists of members who pay annual dues in one of several membership categories including:
- STANDARD membership: requires nomination by an active, standard member and carries the right to cast one vote in matters of Society business.
- AFFILIATE membership: does not require a nomination and is a non-voting membership.
The pages that comprise the AES web site provide information on the society, document its scientific endeavors, and present information on ongoing research, society initiatives, and general interest items to all readers with an interest in elasmobranchs.
